Most photographers use the tools at their disposal to freeze time in their images, like ice covering a river. But this is both the gift of photography and its limitation. Time never stands still. It has even become a matter of pride among the majority that their images are “technically” correct, every millimeter of the subject and background sharply rendered–the verticals vertical and the horizontals horizontal. But what is technically correct and who sets the standard?
Tsoukatou has moved beyond the limitations of the camera to render images of time flowing through her images. She sees objects in motion and captures the essence of their motion. There is urgency surrounding her subjects, a need to be somewhere, to do something. Not to stand still. The Earth is always revolving, moving inexorably into the future.
